Botox has been the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world for over two decades — and if you're considering it for the first time, you likely have questions. Is it safe? Will I look frozen? How long does it last? What does it actually treat? At Sergay Dermatology in South Tampa, Dr. Amanda Sergay performs every injection herself. Here's what you should know before booking your first appointment.
What Is Botox, Actually?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A — a neurotoxin that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell specific muscles to contract. When injected into targeted facial muscles, it causes a controlled relaxation of those muscles. The result: the overlying skin smooths out, and dynamic wrinkles (the ones caused by repeated facial expressions) become significantly less visible.
It's important to understand that Botox is not a dermal filler. Fillers add volume beneath the skin to plump areas like the lips or cheeks. Botox works on muscles, not volume. They treat completely different concerns and are often used together for comprehensive facial rejuvenation — but they are not interchangeable.
What Can Botox Treat?
Botox is FDA-approved for several cosmetic indications and has well-established off-label uses that experienced injectors routinely perform:
- Forehead lines — horizontal lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows
- Glabellar lines ("11s") — the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
- Crow's feet — the fine lines that radiate from the outer corners of the eyes when you smile
- Bunny lines — wrinkles on the sides of the nose that appear when you scrunch it
- Brow lift — strategic placement can create a subtle lifting effect of the outer brow
- Vertical lip lines ("smoker's lines") — fine lines around the mouth from pursing or aging
- Chin dimpling — the "orange peel" texture some people develop on the chin
- Platysmal bands — vertical neck bands from an overactive platysma muscle
- Hyperhidrosis — excessive underarm sweating, also FDA-approved
At Sergay Dermatology, we focus on the upper face — forehead, glabella, and crow's feet — where Botox produces the most natural, reliable, and aesthetically pleasing results.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
A typical Botox appointment at our South Tampa office takes about 15–20 minutes from start to finish. Here's what happens:
- Consultation — Dr. Sergay will assess your facial anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine the optimal injection points and dosing for your specific features. No two faces are identical, and cookie-cutter approaches produce cookie-cutter (often unnatural) results.
- Cleansing — the treatment area is thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
- Marking — injection points may be lightly marked with a removable pencil to ensure precision.
- Injection — using a very fine needle, small amounts of Botox are injected into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, mild pinch. No anesthesia is needed, though a topical numbing cream can be applied for patients who are particularly sensitive.
- Post-care instructions — you'll receive clear guidance on what to do (and avoid) over the next 24 hours.
When Will You See Results?
Botox does not work immediately. The onset follows a predictable timeline:
- Days 1–3: You may start to notice a slight softening of movement in the treated area
- Days 3–7: The effect becomes clearly noticeable — lines appear softer and expressions feel slightly "heavier" in the treated muscles
- Week 2: Full effect is achieved. This is when Dr. Sergay typically schedules a follow-up photo to assess the result
- Months 3–4: Gradual return of muscle movement as the toxin is metabolized
- Month 4–6: Full return to baseline movement. Most patients schedule their next treatment around the 3–4 month mark to maintain results
Will I Look Frozen?
This is the most common concern among first-time Botox patients — and the answer, when Botox is administered by a skilled, board-certified dermatologist, is a resounding no. The "frozen" look is a result of over-treatment, poor placement, or treating muscles that should be left alone.
Dr. Sergay's philosophy is conservative and natural: soften the lines, preserve expression. The goal is for people to notice that you look refreshed, not to wonder what procedure you had. We can always add more at a follow-up visit. We can't take it back once it's injected — so we start conservatively.
Safety, Side Effects, and Contraindications
Botox has one of the strongest safety profiles in all of aesthetic medicine, with over 20 years of clinical use and millions of treatments performed annually worldwide. Common, expected side effects include:
- Mild bruising at injection sites (uncommon, typically resolves within a few days)
- Headache (usually brief, within the first 24 hours)
- Temporary heaviness or tight sensation in the treated area
- Very rare: eyelid droop (ptosis), typically from improper injection technique near the brow
Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in patients with certain neuromuscular disorders, or in individuals with allergies to any component of the formulation. A thorough medical history is always taken before treatment.
Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid)
To ensure optimal results and minimize side effects, follow these guidelines for the first 24 hours:
- Do not rub or massage the treated areas — this can cause the product to migrate to unintended muscles
- Avoid lying down for 4 hours post-treatment
- Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive heat (sauna, hot yoga) for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment to reduce bruising risk
- No facial treatments (massage, facial, microdermabrasion) for 48 hours
Is Botox Right for You?
Ideal candidates for Botox are adults with dynamic wrinkles — lines that appear with expression and soften at rest — who are in good general health and have realistic expectations. Static wrinkles (lines visible even when your face is relaxed) may require a combination approach with fillers or resurfacing treatments like LaseMD Ultra or microneedling.
If you're in South Tampa and curious about whether Botox is a good fit for your goals, the best next step is a consultation. Dr. Sergay will assess your anatomy, discuss what Botox can and cannot achieve for you specifically, and develop a personalized treatment plan.
