Redness, spider veins, persistent facial flushing — these are some of the most common concerns patients bring to Sergay Dermatology, and they're often some of the most frustrating to treat with creams or topicals alone. The DermaV vascular laser is the most powerful tool we have for targeting these concerns at the source.
What Is the DermaV Laser?
DermaV is a pulsed-dye-style vascular laser that emits light at wavelengths specifically absorbed by oxyhemoglobin — the molecule in red blood cells. This selective targeting means the laser destroys abnormal blood vessels and vascular lesions without damaging the surrounding skin tissue.
It's one of the most precise vascular lasers available, and at Sergay Dermatology, we consider it the cornerstone of our vascular treatment program.
What Can DermaV Treat?
DermaV is approved and highly effective for:
- Rosacea — persistent facial redness, background erythema, flushing, and visible blood vessels
- Spider veins and telangiectasias — the small red or purple thread-like veins on the face, nose, and cheeks
- Broken capillaries — especially common after sun damage, trauma, or surgery
- Port wine stains — congenital vascular birthmarks
- Cherry angiomas — small bright-red benign growths that appear with age
- Poikiloderma of Civatte — the mottled redness and pigmentation on the neck from sun damage
- Post-laser and post-procedure redness — accelerating healing after other treatments
How Is DermaV Different From IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broadband light device often used for vascular and pigmentation concerns. While it can be effective for mild redness and diffuse pigmentation, IPL uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths, making it less precise than DermaV.
DermaV's targeted vascular wavelengths deliver energy directly to the hemoglobin in blood vessels, producing more consistent clearance of discrete vessels and more dramatic reduction in rosacea-related redness — often in fewer sessions. For patients with significant vascular concerns, DermaV is the more powerful option.
What Does a DermaV Treatment Feel Like?
Most patients describe the sensation of DermaV as a quick snap — similar to a rubber band flick — at each laser pulse. The treatment is generally very well tolerated, and sessions are quick (typically 15–30 minutes for the full face depending on the extent of treatment).
For patients treating a large area or with extensive rosacea, we can apply topical numbing cream beforehand to improve comfort.
What to Expect After Treatment
Immediately after DermaV, you'll notice some redness and possibly mild swelling in the treated areas — this is expected and is a sign the laser is working. Some patients also experience temporary "purpura" (a bruise-like discoloration) in treated spots, which typically resolves within 7–10 days.
Over the following 2–4 weeks, the targeted vessels fade and collapse, revealing clearer, less red skin. Most patients see significant improvement after 2–3 sessions.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
The number of DermaV sessions depends on the condition being treated and its severity:
- Spider veins and individual vessels — often 1–2 sessions
- Mild to moderate rosacea — typically 2–3 sessions
- Severe rosacea or port wine stains — may require 4–6+ sessions
- Maintenance — rosacea is a chronic condition; annual or as-needed touch-ups are common
Who Is a Good Candidate?
DermaV works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–IV), as darker skin contains more melanin which can compete with the laser's targeting of hemoglobin. At your consultation, Dr. Sergay will assess your skin type and the specific vascular concern to confirm DermaV is appropriate.
Patients should avoid sun exposure, tanning, and blood-thinning medications (like aspirin or NSAIDs) for at least one week before treatment.
